Founder, textile artist and environmental advocate Carole Douglas has worked in India for 25 years in her capacity as a curator, consultant, travel organiser and artist. Her products created under the Conscious Cloth Company label are the result of many years of research to find ‘the perfect product for people and the planet’.
Carole’s designs begin with styles to suit many body shapes and move easily between occasions. Blending her own creativity with cultural integrity she works with traditional artisans to create the textiles from which the garments are made. Organic, hand woven, hand printed and coloured with proven natural dyes are her preferred fabrics and it is from these that she produces limited edition wares in Fair Trade stitching units. Once the goods arrive in Australia Carole frequently adds recycled buttons from her extensive collection and adds embellishment to enhance a garment.
This is ‘slow clothing’ at its best. No harmful chemicals are used and due respect for traditional practices is her key to success.
‘Our fabrics originate in small organic cottons farms and at the end of their useful life can be returned to the earth from which they came. Cradle to cradle – the cycle is complete.’
